The name Oregon was probably Indian in origin, but many myths have obscured the actual source. It may mean anything from "hurricane" to "piece of dried apple." One possibility is the Shoshoenan word oyerungon, which means "place of plenty." Oregon was once a place of plenty of grizzly bears, but now you might say the grizzlies of Oregon are all gone.
